On April 10, 2019, H.E. Ambassador Rakesh Sood, Former Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of India on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Issues and Former Ambassador to Afghanistan, Nepal and France, addressed GRF and GRF Community members at a roundtable meeting. Delivering a two-part speech, Ambassador Sood elaborated on the nature of India’s democracy and the election procedures of a country of 1.3 billion. Ambassador Sood examined why elections in India can last up to 1 month and shared his thoughts on the issues pertinent to the upcoming elections.

In the second part of his speech, Ambassador Sood remarked that despite notable progress being made in global nuclear disarmament, there is still a worry about its future. Indicating that the limits of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) has been reached in terms of functionality, Ambassador Sood emphasized the need to create a new system of non-proliferation in the face of global political power increasingly shifting towards the Asia-Pacific region. Following his speech, Ambassador Sood answered the participants’ questions.
