Online Meeting with Karel Lannoo

Karel Lannoo, CEO of the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), addressed GRF and GRF Groups members at an online meeting held on 23 March 2026.

The meeting, titled “Global Governance Under Pressure: Institutional Reform, Great Power Competition, and the Future of Multilateralism,” focused on the sustainability of global governance in a period of intensifying great power competition. Lannoo discussed how existing multilateral institutions can be reformed and strengthened rather than creating new ones, current debates on United Nations reform, and the role of European actors in preserving the core functions of multilateral cooperation.

He also examined the implications of the evolving role of the United States in the international system and China’s increasing multilateral engagement for the global governance architecture, and answered participants’ questions following his remarks.
