Dr. Sinan Chu, Research Fellow at the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) and Visiting Researcher at Sciences Po – CERI, addressed GRF and GRF Community members at an online meeting titled “China from Within: How Internal Debates Shape a Rising Power’s Place in the World” held on 11 May 2026.

The discussion examined how internal intellectual debates surrounding China’s multiethnic structure influence the country’s foreign policy choices, understanding of sovereignty, and positioning within the international system. Participants explored how the increasingly centralized approach under Xi Jinping has transformed China’s discourse on national unity and its management of ethnic diversity, as well as how these developments have shaped Beijing’s views on territorial integrity, sovereignty, and its relations with countries of the Global South. The meeting also addressed how China and other non-Western powers define their roles within the international order, where their strategic priorities converge or diverge, and the potential implications of these developments for Turkey.
