Online Meeting with Dr. Dmitri Trenin, Director of the Carnegie Moscow Center

Online Meeting with
Dr. Dmitri Trenin,
Director of the Carnegie Moscow Center
May 20, 2021

On May 20, 2021, Dr. Dmitri Trenin, Director of the Carnegie Moscow Center, addressed GRF and GRF Community members at an online meeting. In his speech entitled "The Future of US-Russia Relations Under The Biden Administration", Dr. Trenin compared the disagreements between the US and Russia with past US administrations, and examined how these disagreements could be managed under the Biden administration. Dr. Trenin stated that although tensions between the two countries have reached a critical point when President Joe Biden first came to power, he expects these tensions to be somewhat lessened through strategic stability talks. Dr. Trenin opined that due to the US’ continued red lines on issues like cybersecurity and Ukraine under Biden as well as Russia’s insistence on a multipolar global order make it highly unlikely for bilateral relations to change their course in the short run, and expressed that preventing an armed, kinetic conflict between the two powers should be the number one priority. Following his speech, Dr. Trenin answered the participants’ questions.
