It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of our esteemed member, economist, columnist, and former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (CBRT), Dr. Ercan Kumcu, and extend our condolences to his family and all who held him dear.
Born in 1955, Ercan Kumcu earned his undergraduate degree in Economics from Boğaziçi University and completed his master’s and doctoral studies at the University of Minnesota. Continuing his academic career in the United States, Kumcu served as a faculty member at Boston College, Eastern Michigan University, and the State University of New York at Binghamton, teaching courses in macroeconomics, monetary theory, international economics, and finance.
After returning to Turkey, he served as a faculty member in the Department of Economics at Boğaziçi University and, in the 1990s, held the position of Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey, making significant contributions to monetary policy and financial stability. From 1995 to 2008, he served as Vice Chairman and later Chairman of the Board of Tekfenbank (Eurobank Tekfen), and was also a member of the Board of Directors of Tekfen Holding.
Throughout his career, he provided senior-level consultancy to the banking sector and financial institutions, and authored numerous articles, columns, and analyses on economic policy, market dynamics, and global economic developments. As a long-standing economics columnist for Milliyet newspaper, Dr. Kumcu reached a wide readership and was recognized by the public for his sharp analyses and foresight in the field of economics.
