Cemal Kafadar is Vehbi Koç Professor of Turkish Studies and former
Director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University.
Prof Kafadar taught at Princeton’s Near Eastern Studies department
before moving to Harvard University. Prof. Kafadar’s acclaimed 1996
book, Between Two Worlds: The Construction of the Ottoman State,
addresses debates about the founding of the Ottoman empire. Previously,
Prof. Kafadar authored The Ottomans and Europe 1400-1600. Through his
work and teaching, Prof. Kafadar develops a deeper and critical
understanding of Ottoman history. Prof. Kafadar received his bachelor’s
degree from Hamilton College and PhD in Islamic studies from McGill
University.
