Salim Dervişoğlu served as the Commander of the Turkish Naval Forces from 1997 to 1999. Previously, Admiral Dervişoğlu served as the Deputy Secretary General of the Turkish National Security Council, Head of Plans and Policy Department of NATO Allied Naval Forces Command of Southern Europe, Superintendent of the Turkish Naval Academy, Chief of the Intelligence Division of the Turkish General Staff, and Head of Press and Public Relations Department of the Turkish National Security Council. Admiral Dervişoğlu is currently a member of the Wise Men Center for Strategic Studies in Istanbul. He is a graduate of the Turkish Naval War College and received his MS in management from the U.S Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey.
