Oktar Ataman

Retired General Oktar Ataman was born in Istanbul. He graduated from the Turkish Military Academy in 1961. Following his training at the Artillery School, he served in various ranks of the Turkish Military. Between 1966-1968, he served in the Republic of Korea as an assistant military attaché and liaison officer with the United Nations Command. Following his graduation from the Turkish Army Staff College in 1975, he was appointed as a project officer to the Operations and Plans Division of the Turkish General Staff (TGS). In 1977, he was accepted by the British Royal Army Staff College. His other assignments as a TGS officer include; instructing at the Turkish Army Staff College, staff duties at the Plans and Policy Division of NATO’s SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe) Command in Belgium and assuming the post of Secretary General - Headquarters Staff of Turkish Land Forces as well as chairing the Board of Instructors at the Turkish Army Staff College. Mr. Ataman also commanded the Corps of Cadets Regiment at the Turkish Military Academy for two years. Between 1988-1992, he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General and was appointed as the Chief of Plans and Operations Division at TGS. He also assumed command of the 14th Mechanised Infantry Brigade during this period. In 1992, Mr. Ataman was promoted to the rank of Major General and re-assigned as the Chief of Strategy and Force Planning Division at TGS. Until his promotion to the rank of Liutenant General in 1997, he retained the command of First Mechanised Infantry Division. Between 1997-2001, he was assigned as the Chief of Operations (J3) at TGS and later was appointed as Permanent Military Represantative of Turkey to NATO. During this period, he assumed command of the 6th Army Corps. Between 2001-2004, interval which Mr. Ataman served as Full General, he assumed command of NATO’s Southeast Europe Joint Force and 3rd Turkish Third Army. Oktar Ataman is a graduate of the Turkish Army War College and National Security College. He is married and has two children. He retired from the Army on September 1st, 2004 after 43 years of active service. He lives in İstanbul and Kumluca/Antalya.
